Wichita Mountains National Wildlife RefugeWhere Nature Abounds.... I've been to a lot of state parks in my day, but few can compare to the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. Here is just a sampling of what can be found within the wildlife refuge: - Well-designed nature center featuring wildlife, plant life and rocks indigenous to the area. - Elk, Buffalo, Longhorns, as well as a Prairie Dog Village - Miles & miles of hiking trails. - The Holy City; a recreation of the Life of Jesus; - Wildflowers year-round; - Huge boulders, including Boulder Valley which streams down from Mount Scott which rises over 1,000 feet into the air; - Camp Doris Camping Grounds, complete with showers and electrical/water equipped campsites. - Birds (including bird watching areas), snakes (we've seen a few rattlesnakes amid our visits), skunks, possums, raccoons (we saw a family of raccoons squawking by the stream parallel to Camp Doris one summer night) - An ominous castle; - Picnic grounds, fishing holes and so much more.
