Fort Richardson State Park - Pictures of the Scenery

The cacti are plentiful at Fort Richardson State Park, tucked inside the gentle valleys flowing along the stream that threads through the state park. They can also be found in open fields throughout the park.

We visited in mid-October in time to view the cacti fruit ripening. Many species of bugs are drawn to the sweetness of the fruit allowing great opportunity for photographers.

Many of the fields of cacti were shadowed by the colors of an early Autumn, bright hues of yellow, red and burnt orange gleaming in the background.

The fruit of the cacti is absolutely delicious when harvested after the fruit has fully ripened. The cacti spines can inflict great pain - along with a handsome doctor bill (I wonder how I know this....), but of course the harvesting of the cacti fruit is prohibited in the state park.
