 Fort Richardson State Park

This natural gemstone is embedded deep within the heart of Texas, showcased with the sereneness of nature and seasoned with flavors of the past. A myriad of untold stories rests along one corridor of Fort Richardson State Park where the restored fort lies anchored.

Fort Richardson State Park - Hospital

After the dawn of the Civil War, settlers moved north into the area - often clashing with Comanche and Kiowa Indians which prompted the military to set up fortresses along the area for protection. Fort Richardson was key in securing the northern edge of the skirmishes.

Although the buildings are locked, state park visitors can look into the many windows in the group of structures to take a view into the past and imagine what the life of a soldier might have been like. For those longing for a more enriching experience, guided tours can be arranged through the state park office at Fort Richardson State Park.

The hospital is the most impressive structure within the mesh of buildings that made up the fort, towering in the distance throughout the park.

Visible through the windows are tiny scenes created to give the state park visitor a sense of the daily life at the fort.

In one area of the hospital, a make-shift kitchen can be seen, a pot-bellied stove the focal point of the room.

Another window into the past reveals a dining area depicting the foods that may have been prepared for the soldiers of Fort Richardson.

Bread, beans, steak and tators appear to make up the heart of the meal in the photo that we took which is to the left.

Although Fort Richardson State Park is one of the historic sites in the Texas Park's System, its foundation leans more towards nature. Hikers, rockhounds, adventure seekers, climbers, campers, equestrians, birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts can discover a well of fun within the gates of Fort Richardson State Park.

As a note, Fort Richardson State Park & Historic Site is located on 228 State Park Road 61 in Jacksboro, Texas. Jacksboro is a little over an hour's drive to Fort Worth, Texas and about 40 miles to Weatherford, Texas which is a fair-sized, booming town of futuristic proportions.
