Recipe for Birdseed Cakes - Suet FeedersThis is a very, very easy recipe for winter birdseed cakes that can be placed out flat for bird feeding or hung inside those familiar green-wire cages. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that there is no need to measure! Six cakes cost about $1.00 to make - so the birds not only get a healthy, tasty cake, you'll save a lot of money in the process while making them happy.
Birdseed Cake Recipe: Melt the following ingredients in a large microwave-safe bowl: lard or shortening, peanut butter, bit of white syrup. Remove and quickly add any of the following until mixture doesn't stir easily: sunflower seeds, cracked corn, birdseed, raisins, dried fruits, nuts, oats and flaxseed. Line a plastic sandwich container with plastic wrap and spoon mixture into the 'mold'. Since the mixture sets up quickly once the shortening begins to cool, I use several sandwich containers and pop each into the freezer for just a few minutes before unmolding for easier handling. I also keep an eye out for store specials on the items that I use for my cakes. Shortening, peanut butter and syrup can easily be obtained for a $1.00 in many stores in our area. A large can of shortening makes about 3 batches of the birdseed cake recipe - as does a small jar of peanut butter. A small bottle of syrup will produce about 10 batches or 60 winter birdseed cakes. We also purchase a lot of birdseed so my seed mixture is garnered from our supply at hand. I hope that you have fun making these tasty treats for the birds in your area! |
