CAMPING FIRSTAID &
SAFETY
Nature's backyard can be a
dangerous place. Every year, hikers and campers perish due to preventable
accidents.
Getting trapped in rock slides, crossing creeks with rising waters, getting
too near the edge of high terrain, and unexpected animal
encounters of the close kind are all situations which require quick,
savvy decision-making and these type situations should always be taken seriously.
Even though most of us are aware
that it's dangerous to cross creeks during rising waters, every
year people perish from doing such. Smart people!
With
West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease in the mix (just to mention
a couple), the safety level heightens. Here are the very basic safety
tips to keep in mind while out in the wild:
- Never drink from an unknown
water source, even if the water appears crystal clear.
- Check in at the Ranger Station
and get the scoop on wildlife in the area. Ask for advice should
you meet up with such.
- Campfires should be COLD
before leaving the area. Smoldering campfires are capable of catching
wind and rekindling.
- Keep all food stuff sealed
and locked.
- Keep an eye on the weather.
A rainstorm in another county can trigger a surge of water within
minutes for miles away.
- Always carry a firstaid kit.
Remember, an accident is never planned.
- Think about potentially hazardous
situations and get a plan in mind should they be unexpectedly presented.
