HIKING - CANYONS TO CREEKBEDS
Some of the most spectacular showcases for
canyons and creekbeds belong to the southwestern territory of New
Mexico. The high elevation allows for quick cooling once the sun
sinks, so if you're camping, get locked in before dusk or expect
icicles on your nose.
The Sugarite State Park is one of my favorite
areas of New Mexico and offers four-star camping, as well as those
magnificent canyon walls, and a nature center to toot-one's-horn
about.
Beware that bears do live in the region. You'll of course,
want to brush up on 'bear safety' beforehand.
As for creekbeds, one of the more
spectacular areas is within Beaver's Bend State Park in Oklahoma.
The area has a myriad of pluses for the outdoor adventurer such
as: mountain ranges, fall foliage viewing, deer viewing, bird watching
(including a stretch of hummingbird feeders at the nature center),
and many great hiking trails. And the people at the park are flat-out
nice.
