HIKING BACKPACK - JUST
THE BASICS, MAM
The backpack rests like a large
purse on the hiker's back and depending on the brand and the contents
of the backpack, it can be as light as a peacock's feather
or as heavy as a witch's caldron. I once crammed too much into my
backpack, and by the time I reached the campground for the evening,
I looked like Quasi's sister.
We suggest that you fill your
backpack with lightweight items. Rather than load it with water
(which is basically dead although necessary weight), attach a water
bottle around your waist. You'll also be wise to avoid melting objects
in warmer weather.
Another disadvantage of the
backpack is that it tends to lock in heat, something unwelcome during
hot weather.
Some suggestions that you might
like to pack include: peanut patty (doesn't easily melt yet it's
packed with energy), jerky, salted potato chips, and 'Hard
as Thy Noggin' Bread'
- a great hiking recipe from our sister site The
Medieval Diet.
Keep in mind that as you expend
calories and precious fluids, you'll need to replace those to avoid
getting ill. Take in plenty of fluids, get a little salt, and eat
a banana or a potato for lost potassium at the end of your hike.
