HIKING AREAS FOR
THE DISABLED
More than once while I've been
hiking, I've contemplated how unfortunate hiking opportunities can
be for the disabled. Just because an individual is disabled doesn't
mean that they don't yearn to do the same things as whole-bodied
individuals.
With this in mind, it's vital
that trailheads be open for all to enjoy.
True, there will always
be risky areas where a wheelchair will be impossible to take. However,
enough isn't being done by the Park's Systems to provide rolling
room for our disabled citizens.
We have a handful of parks with
a handful of wheelchair accessible areas that take one to the edge
of nature, but not quite through that golden window. Encourage more
to be done by writing to the Parks System and sharing ideas for
potential trails. Your voice does indeed count. For although
man may travel to the moon, let's pave the way for men to walk on
earth, where no man has walked before....
