CAMPING - INSECTS LIKE
TO CAMP TOO!
There's a camping tip that's
been circling the campgrounds for years now and I'm here to tell
ya that it's more bite than bark - insect bites that is...
THE CLAIM: "Campfire
smoke will keep the bugs (particularly mosquitoes) away."
Tom and I had pitched a tent
on the shoreline of Sea Rim State Park amid of fog of thick, choking
smoke. The mosquitoes were terrible, as they always tend to be near
water. On this evening, they were so thick we both looked like black
beaded bags.
They were everywhere, appearing to almost thrive in
the smoke - which was a controlled burn being supervised by the
local forestry authorities. Lucky us to have arrived on this special
day....
Close to the early morning
hours, we feared smoke inhalation, and the poor guy that was camping
next to us had kept us up all night with a hoarse hacking cough
- one to which his small dog would break into a loud bark every
time the man coughed.
We recommend that campers always
bring along their favorite bug repellent just in case that smoky
fire doesn't do the trick!
